The Congress on Monday lost power in yet another state. The party's loss in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat have added to the string of defeats that the party has faced in the last three years, beginning 2014. The 2014 Lok Sabha elections marked a new low for the Congress when the number of seats the party won was even less than the percentage of votes it had polled in 1984.
In 1984, the Congress riding on an emotional wave after the assassisation of Indira Gandhi, won an unprecedented 415 seats with a vote share of 48 per cent. 30 years later in 2014, the party under Sonia and Rahul Gandhi got reduced to 44 seats, the party's worst ever performance.
