The upper house of the Japanese parliament on Friday passed a legislation paving the way for 83-year-old Emperor Akihito to abdicate. The law sets the stage for the first abdication of a reigning monarch in two centuries. Akihito, who has had heart surgery, has been on the throne in Japan since the death of his father, Hirohito, in 1989.
