Jagtar Singh Tara, convicted in the assassination of former Punjab chief minister, Beant Singh, was on Saturday sentenced to life imprisonment. Earlier today, Tara claimed that he did not regret his actions and would continue his "battle" for the "freedom" of Sikhs in the country. "If by killing a cruel person I can save thousands of innocent people then it is not wrong," Tara said through his counsel, Simranjit Singh, amidst chants of pro-Khalistan slogans by the supporters. The sentencing came a day after Tara, a pro-Khalistan terrorist, was found guilty by the court of additional district and sessions judge JS Sidhu. Tara had confessed to his crime in a six-page letter submitted to the court. On Friday, he urged the court to treat him like a "prisoner of war", saying he was a Sikh nationalist fighting for the freedom of the occupied Sikh state.
