About 40% of Gujarat’s 182 MLAs have received notices from the income tax (I-T) department, asking them to explain discrepancies in incomes shown in their returns and affidavits filed before the 2017 assembly poll. Over 70 lawmakers from both the BJP and the Congress have received the notices, according to sources.
Political observers say that this is the first case of I-T notices being sent to such a large number of lawmakers. “I am aware that I-T notices have been sent to many MLAs,” said Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani. “As public representatives, it’s our duty to comply with procedures.”
