The administration of Donald Trump has announced a 30-day waiver allowing countries to purchase sanctioned Russian oil and petroleum products currently stranded at sea, in a move aimed at stabilising global energy markets after benchmark crude prices surged past USD 100 per barrel amid the ongoing war in the Middle East.
The US Treasury Department said on Thursday that it had issued a temporary licence authorising the delivery and sale of Russian crude oil and petroleum products that were already loaded on vessels as of March 12. The licence will remain valid until midnight Washington time on April 11.
