The Supreme Court on Tuesday observed that the Election Commission is correct in saying that Aadhaar cannot be treated as conclusive proof of citizenship. The SC is hearing petitions challenging a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar.
The Supreme Court also observed that the primary issue to be decided was whether the Election Commission of India had the authority to conduct the voter verification exercise. Justice Surya Kant remarked that if the ECI lacked such power, the matter would end there, but if it did possess the authority, there should be no objection to the process.
