Emails threatening blasts sent to at least 36 Ahmedabad-based schools on the eve of the May 7 voting have been traced to Pakistan, labelling them as an attempt to spread fear among the people ahead of polling.

"The emails were sent to the schools from the 'mail.ru' domain in the name of Tauheed Liaquat. Their aim was to spread fear among voters and Indian citizens," said Sharad Singhal, joint commissioner of police, City Crime Branch. Tauheed Liaquat also operated as Hamad Javed. The person who was operating under these identities was based out of Faisalabad district in Pakistan, Singhal said.

The same person created several bogus accounts under fictitious names on social media platforms among which was an account in the name of Hamad Javed. The platforms were used to spread rumours and fear among Indians, he said.
