The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet on Friday (12 December) approved the conduct of the Census of India 2027, clearing the way for the population count exercise at an estimated cost of Rs 11,718.24 crore.

The exercise, last held in 2011, will be carried out in two phases spread over 2026 and 2027, with data collection and monitoring largely shifting to mobile applications and online platforms.

The funding covers everything from app development to nationwide digital infrastructure, ensuring no corner of India lags behind. Census 2027 to be conducted in two phases- 'House listing' between April and September 2026 and 'Population Enumeration' in February 2027, added Ashwini Vaishnaw.
