The Uttar Pradesh government, which has been demolishing the houses of protestors agitating against the controversial comments on Prophet Muhammed, faced a setback as it was told by the Supreme Court today (June 16) that “demolitions have to be in accordance with law, they cannot be retaliatory”.

However, the SC did not issue a stay on the demolitions saying that they cannot stay demolitions and that they can only say to the government to act in accordance with the law. But the SC has directed the UP government and civic authorities of Prayagraj and Kanpur to give their replies before taking up the petitioner’s case on this issue, next Tuesday.
