Japan has lifted a tsunami alert it issued after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the country's southwest on Tuesday (Jul 28) and knocked out power to thousands of households
The tremor at 4.27pm (3.27pm, Singapore time) on the island of Kyushu also measured at the highest possible level seven on Japan's own Shindo scale of shaking, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. The tsunami alert was removed on the agency's website just under two hours after the quake. "This earthquake occurred inland, and no tsunami activity has been observed so far," said a JMA spokesperson earlier. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said that several injuries, collapsed buildings and fires had been reported after the earthquake.
