Tensions in the Election Commission spilled into the open days before counting of votes for the Lok Sabha polls, with chief election commissioner Sunil Arora terming as “unsavoury and avoidable” the controversy kicked up by election commissioner Ashok Lavasa’s reported insistence on recording of dissent in decisions on model code violations.
Lavasa was reported to have called for a systematic procedure for addressing model code violation complaints, including time-bound disposal through speaking orders that bring out dissent or minority views. He has been at odds with the CEC and election commissioner Sushil Chandra over MCC violation cases regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah.
