For the first time in the history of independent India, a state on Tuesday was made a Union Territory after the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha. While Jammu and Kashmir will be a UT with legislature, it has also been bifurcated with Ladakh emerging as a separate UT, albeit without legislature.

Jammu and Kashmir Bifurcation Bill, 2019 passed in Lok Sabha with 366 voting for and 66 voting against. The chair had announced re-vote as the number displayed was incorrect. Earlier, the vote division was 351-ayes and 72-noes.

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019 has been passed by Lok Sabha. with 370 ayes and 70 noes. The Bill was passed by Rajya Sabha yesterday.

The Bill will now go to President Ram Nath Kovind for his signature.
