TMC leader and nephew of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday sent a defamation notice to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through his lawyer. The notice was sent for alleged derogatory remarks made against him in a public rally on 15 May, held in Diamond Harbour in West Bengal.

Modi in his rally address had claimed that the state was going through a "torturous period under didi-bhatija" and that people would give the TMC a befitting reply by rallying behind the BJP.

"Your imputations were deliberate and (mala fide), perpetrated through thinly-veiled references of 'bhatija' and 'didi' while being fully aware that Smt. Mamata Banerjee is referred to as 'didi' and my client himself is the only nephew of the said Smt. Banerjee who is involved in public life and is the sitting MP from Diamond Harbour," the letter reads.

Highlighting other remarks that the PM is said to have made during the rally, the letter said that the allegations were "slanderous, malicious and false".
