A record 5.65 crore income tax returns were filed up to Saturday, the extended deadline for the annual filing, suggesting that more individuals are now part of the tax net. However, the surge in filing of returns seen in the aftermath of demonetisation seems to be petering out.
Data released by the income tax department on Sunday showed that till the end of August, there was a 4% increase in filings for financial year 2018-19, compared with the 5.4 crore returns that were filed up to August 31, 2018.
