The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a sweeping ban on e-cigarettes, making production, manufacturing, import, export, transport, sale and advertisements of the product punishable offences with jail terms from one to three years and fines of Rs 1lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

The government has taken the ordinance route for the ban, saying that it needs to act in the interest of public health and take action to prevent rising addiction, particularly among youth, for e-cigarettes that come in attractive flavours like mint and chocolate. The ban covers hookah bars as well.
