Before the voters turn up to the polling booths, here is a detailed look at the criminal cases, education, financial background and other details of candidates on the basis of a survey report issued by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

The report analyzes 909 of the total 918 candidates on the basis of disclosures made in their respective election affidavit. Of all the 909 candidates analyzed, 159 are from national parties, 68 are from state parties, 369 are from registered unrecognized parties and 313 candidates are contesting independently.

Take a look at the criminal background, financial status and education details of candidates:

Education Background:

A total of 401 (44%) candidates have declared their educational qualification to be between 5th and 12th, while 437 (48%) candidates have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above. Around 29 candidates have declared to be just literate and 24 candidates are illiterate.

Financial background:

Of the 909 candidates, 278 are crorepatis. It means 31 percent contenders have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.

Going party-wise, 40 (89%) out of 45 candidates from Congress, 36 (84%) out of 43 candidates from BJP, 11 (28%) out of 39 candidates from BSP, nine (64%) out of 14 candidates from AAP and 59 (19%) out of 313 independent candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.

PM Narendra Modi ranks 159 with assets worth Rs 2.51 crore. It includes movable assets worth Rs 1.41 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 1.10 crore.

Criminal background:        

Of all candidates analyzed, 170 have declared criminal cases against themselves. This makes 19 percent of all contenders in the seventh phase.

Going party-wise, 18 (42%) out of 43 candidates from BJP, 14 (31%) out of 45 candidates from Congress, six (15%) out of 39 candidates from BSP, three (21%) out of 14 candidates analysed from AAP and 29 (9%) out of 313 independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

A total of 10 candidates have declared cases related to hate speech.

Red Alert Constituencies:

Of the 59 constituencies, 33 are red alert constituencies, which means these seats have three or more candidates with criminal cases against them.
