The Ministry of Railways has announced a revision in the basic fare of passenger train services, effective from July 1, in a move to streamline fare structures and enhance the financial sustainability of passenger services.
Non-AC Classes (Long-Distance Routes): Fares to increase by 1 paisa per kilometre.
Second Class (Non-AC): A 0.5 paisa per km hike for journeys beyond 500 km; no change for distances up to 500 km.
Distance-Based Increases:
—501–1500 km: Rs 5 more
—1501–2500 km: Rs 10 more
—2501–3000 km: ₹15 more
Sleeper and First Class (Non-AC): Fares up by 0.5 paisa per km.
Air-Conditioned Classes: Including AC Chair Car, AC 2-Tier, AC 3-Tier, and Executive Class, fares will rise by 2 paise per km.
These changes also apply to premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, and Vande Bharat Express.
Different structure for AC, non-AC categories
Sleeper and first-class fares in non-AC categories will also rise by 0.5 paisa per km as per the ministry.
For AC classes across mail and express trains, including AC Chair Car, AC-Tier 2 and 3, and Executive Class, fares will increase by 2 paise per km.
These changes will also apply to premier trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat and others, the ministry outlined in the notification.
No changes for suburban and season tickets
The ministry confirmed that suburban single journey tickets, monthly season tickets (MSTs), and ancillary charges such as reservation and superfast fees remain unchanged. GST will continue to apply as per current norms. Notably, tickets booked before July 1 will not be affected.
