A Delhi court has issued a notice to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on a defamation complaint filed by Lipika Mitra, the wife of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti, reported Bar and Bench.
In her complaint, Mitra has accused Sitharaman of "making and publishing defamatory, derogatory remarks in print and electronic media" against her and her husband during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The complaint alleged that the Finance Minister had wrongly spoken about alleged marital discord between Mitra and Bharti for political gains in a press conference on May 17, 2024. Mitra said that the libellous remarks were made with the sole intention to tarnish Bharti's reputation and weaken his chances of winning the general elections.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for June 12.
